I attended the sold out Blood Orange concert last night at the El Rey Theatre here in Los Angeles.
Before Dev Hynes and band came on the stage, Samantha Urbani (Hynes’ girlfriend, Cupid Deluxe contributor and Friends frontwoman) talked to some friends in the audience about a foot in front of where I stood. I am a big fan of her work on the Blood Orange album and with Friends and she could definitely be a model, a really down-to-earth one of course.
The show began and started with "Chamakay", and this crowd was hyped, wooing and cheering when Dev started singing— I got serious Prince vibes at this moment.
I don’t want to compare Dev to Prince or Michael or R. Kelly because he really does stand out on his own and is a phenomenal music craftsman. You’re Not Good Enough” with Samantha was next and the crowd was moving, which sustained and increased for the rest of the show. Pretty much all of Cupid Deluxe was played, even the tracks with Kindness and Dave Longstreth were performed— the latter saw Dev’s saxophonist fill in for the Dirty Projectors singer and he owned it.
I went solo to this show and I have to say that I don’t really groove much at shows, even when I’m with other people— but this show I was grooving the whole time by myself and was seriously Pharrell-crying happy most of the time.
I feel very fortunate to have attended this Blood Orange show, not only because it was amazing, but because Dev has previously said he may not tour this album that much. If you are going to Coachella this weekend, do not miss his set.
